{"id":1601,"date":"2026-01-24T01:02:53","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T23:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalfinance.best\/?p=1601"},"modified":"2026-01-25T22:44:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T20:44:49","slug":"anz-banking-group-shows-off-its-api-mesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smebanking.agency\/platform\/anz-banking-group-shows-off-its-api-mesh\/","title":{"rendered":"ANZ Banking Group shows off its &#8216;API Mesh&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANZ Banking Group has stood up what it is calling its \u2018API Mesh\u2019 platform, which represents the bank\u2019s efforts to \u201cthink differently\u201d about API management, publishing and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The API Mesh as a concept was first introduced briefly in a Kong&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/konghq.com\/customer-stories\/anz-unlocks-open-banking-with-kong-konnect\" target=\"_blank\">case study<\/a>&nbsp;as a \u201cconfiguration-driven and highly flexible set of gateways and pathways\u201d that act as \u201cconnective tissue between availability zones\u201d &#8211; the data centres or clouds that host its applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The API Mesh will enable the applications that provide APIs into the ecosystem to move independently of each other and reduce the friction involved with managing their API lifecycle, without dependency on a centralised team during development and testing.<\/p>\n<cite>Technology area lead in enterprise integration services Martin Brennan said in the case study<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bank then provided substantially more detail on the API Mesh at the Kong Digital Summit in late September, with the presentation appearing to coincide with the platform\u2019s then imminent go-live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Product owner Nikki Renvoize said the API Mesh was built \u201cmostly remotely\u201d during lockdowns in Melbourne and Sydney, \u201cbar a couple of sweet months where we got to use whiteboards in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the reasons the API Mesh was created was to enable self-service capabilities for both API providers and API consumers across the bank\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANZ had an existing API management platform for which self-service capabilities had been successfully built, but it was \u201climited to on-premises\u201d use and not designed for multi-cloud &#8211; the latter being a direction the bank is now pursuing with some vigour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe banking industry in Australia has been a little hesitant in its moves to the cloud &#8211; some have moved fast, others slower,\u201d Brennan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree-to-four years ago we had quite a resistance to moving things into the cloud, but now that the business is getting better at understanding the possible benefits there, the pace is picking up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe incumbent [API] platform wasn\u2019t designed to be multicloud, and it gave us that decision point &#8211; extend or adapt the existing platform or start afresh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decision was taken to start afresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were in a position to build a greenfields platform,\u201d Renvoize said. \u201cThis is something that you don\u2019t often get to do in a large regulated organization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brennan said that the number of application developers at the bank traditionally dwarfed the number of people assigned to enterprise integration services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bank wanted developers as well as internal consumers of API services to be able to self-serve some of their needs, and to minimize the amount of work that needed to run through the centralized integration function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen the result of centralized high-friction integration delivery within the bank and I knew it wasn\u2019t going to scale to &#8230; the speed the bank needed to deliver at,\u201d Brennan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had a picture in my mind of the sort of experience that we could offer from an integration platform, and I knew that security, reliability, and observability were going to be essential to the success of that platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I didn&#8217;t know was how the team was going to achieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brennan said that ANZ had a \u201chuge number of developers working on hundreds of applications in dozens of languages\u201d, each with \u201cvarying levels of API capability\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe integration team by comparison is very small &#8211; less than 200 people including our delivery partners,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had to think differently about the way API management was delivered and change the interactions between the teams for the organization to be able to move fast and innovate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were a few things we knew would be critical to our success. We needed to minimize the dependency on the small, centralized team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also needed to have a platform that was really stable; outages in our industry impact people\u2019s ability to buy their groceries and pay their bills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we needed the application teams to be able to move at their own pace and do things for themselves. Things weren\u2019t going to wait around on a backlog from an integration team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renvoize said the result of the work is what the bank calls \u2018API Mesh\u2019, which she describes as a \u201cmulticloud and cloud hybrid platform that allows [developers] to access integration capabilities across the hosting zones within the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe platform allows [API] consumers and [API] providers to access what is local to them and be connected to all other zones, and this is where our mesh concept comes in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did this by placing a Kong Konnect [API] gateway in each location and developing secure and &#8211; this is important &#8211; pre-approved pathways between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis model allowed us to achieve a consistent consumption pattern regardless of the location of an [API] provider.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf a consumer &#8211; let\u2019s say they\u2019re cloud-based &#8211; needs to consume two APIs, one is local to them and one is based on-premises, they\u2019ll have the same experience of consuming both of those APIs. That is to say, they connect into the same gateway to get access to either of them, so there\u2019s no additional work to consume [an API] from a \u2018foreign\u2019 zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renvoize said that the structure also meant that if an application changed its underlying hosting, any associated APIs could be easily re-consumed from the new location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[API] consumers and providers need to only worry about the gateway in their location,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using the API Mesh platform, \u201can onboarded user can deploy, update and manage the lifecycle of their APIs with zero interaction from the platform team,\u201d Renvoize said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAside from approvals when we get to production, this means they are never waiting on us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis effectively brings integration services into their realm of control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt reduces the pressure on us, and it allows them to rapidly iterate the integration services in line with the rest of their development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of Kong to underpin the API Mesh builds on work ANZ did for open banking in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur first foray into Kong was part of our open banking platform,\u201d Brennan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a limited use case but it had unpredictable usage patterns.
